one space or two

RED FLAG: This blog is quickly becoming a platform for grammar. I recognize that and it will end soon. However, before it does, is it one space or two? I just read on Holly's blog that it's supposed to be only one now, but ever since I learned to type asdf jkl; in 6th grade, it's always been two spaces after a period. See, like that! What is it? One space or two? I'm not sure I can handle typing one space, so if you get frequent communication from me via email (WEC staff and volunteers, friends, etc.), expect me to be WRONG on this grammar point because I think I will forever be a two spacer!

  1. heymayday, it sounds like you need a little extra space in your life.

The onset of the "two space rule" came with the typewriter and monospaced type (where each letter takes up the same amount of space)which would leave gaps between the letters. Two spaces then made it apparent where the line ended. (really?) Now that we have proportional spacing it makes it unnecessary. Honestly, do what you feel is best. Viva la revolucion!

  2. Brian Miller is correct. Now that there is proportional spacing, two spaces after a period is just not necessary anymore. It takes awhile to become adjusted to one space, but it can be done. However, I doubt if anyone would be that upset by two spaces. I love your writing style, by the way!
