Confession: I am not a great driver. I make lots of mistakes every day. I have driven in the HOV lane, during HOV lane hours, more than twice when it was just me in the car. Have you?
One morning last week as I drove to work, 8 out of the 10 people who passed me were driving illegally in the HOV lane. 8 out of 10. That's 80 percent. They were driving with no passengers in the HIGH OCCUPANCY vehicle lane. Isn't that against the law or something? I try not to be legalistic, but it got me thinking...
Seriously? What's okay about that, except that I want to get where I'm going faster and it's all about me. It seems to say, "Who cares? It's just a suggestion!"
How often do we push the limit in life... knowing what's right and wrong, but seeing how many times we can "drive in the HOV lane" or worse, without getting caught? And how many times do we see our particular sin as a not-so-bad offense? In the moment, the selfish desire for instant gratification outweighs the desire to, well, please our Heavenly Father... and set an example for others... and keep from snowballing out of control. After all, I contend that it's not just the HOV lane.
Okay, so maybe this is a rant. But, since discovering this seemingly daily disregard for the HOV lane from my fellow drivers, I've made a concerted effort to not drive there. I also try to stop completely at 4-way stops and not turn right on red when the sign says "no right on red." This may or may not be due in part to receiving 2 tickets for violating these laws in the past year.
Red is similar to Alabama football though, so "Rolling" a red light when turning red is really just supporting the Crimson Tide with your daily actions of Roll Tide. Right???
